Sitsit

… a Sitsit? What’s that? I had the same question before, so let me explain it shortly to you. Basically it is a kind of formal evening with dinner, that is spent with a lot of other people. The guests are served by the organisers or helpers while having a three-course meal that includes whine and some shots. 🙂 … you can imagine that this evening was not focussing on the meal. In general you dress up in a formal way even though most of the Sitsits have a theme. This time the theme was ‚funny hats‘.

The tradition of Sitsits in Sweden and Finland is about singing songs during the evening. At the Tampere University of Technology (TUT) they have a songbook called ‚Rasputin‘, in which you can find all traditional songs about the life and studies at TUT. Most of the songs are really funny and contain crazy stories. I might write about it in another post. In order to sing a song, one of the guests stands up and delivers a speech and the reason why it makes sence to sing the proposed song now. By the words „… and it sounds like …“ all the people start singing the song together. If a song takes a while, it is possible to interrupt it for having a drink. Glasses are touched and everybody can have a zip of his drink before the singing goes on. That’s because nobody is supposed to die because of thirst during a Sitsit. 😉

The evening was really funny and quite boozy for most of the people. As an Erasmus-Student in Finland everybody should take his chance to be part of a Sitsit. It’s definately worth it. DerRené.
